"Magpie Cairn" an Original Watercolor Painting

"Magpie Cairn" an Original Watercolor Painting

This mischievous Magpie is so pleased with his rock cairn.  Rock Cairns are a traditional and important method of marking a path, such as a trail or to be seen from the sea (before lighthouses!).

I used rich blues and a bit of iridescent pigment to paint my Magpie.  Each stone was painted using pigment made from ground stone including Zoisite, Sodalite, Bloodstone and Burnt Bronzite by Daniel Smith Watercolors.  There is also a tiny snail tucked into the cairn, and a hint of a fossil.

Original Watercolor painting on 10"x 22" 140lb cold press paper, protected in an archival sleeve with backerboard and a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.
